What is it like to be in a COT program?
I had the chance to interview my friend who is going to the OMT (Ophthalmic Medical Technician) program at Pima, which prepares students to become COTs(Certified Ophthalmic Technicians). She was very kind in letting me ask her some questions. I am grateful for the time that she took out of her day to help. Why did you decide to go to become a COT?
For the past 8 years I wanted to work in ophthalmology. I originally went to business school then spent some time raising a family. My kids are now teenagers. Teenagers are expensive! I wanted to make our financial situation a little better while doing something that I love.
How expensive is the program you are attending?
The program is currently 28,000. I new that I could make this up in a year after graduation. I was also able to use pell grants to help with the cost.
How long is the program and what certification do you get?
The program is 20 months. We all get our COA during the program. When we graduate we are eligible to take the COT.
What experience has been the most memorable for you so far?
I remember being freaked out when we were learning applanation tonometry. I had to actually touch someone else’s eye with this instrument. At first we tested each other then they had us test it on real people. That was nerve racking!
What advice would you give to people who may be interested in going to formal training?
You will go way more in depth than you think. I never had to do this much math and science in my life. We learn general anatomy, ocular anatomy, and multiple semesters of optics. We are currently learning about assisting in surgery. Be prepared to study!
